Heinrich Aldegrever’s detailed engraving pays homage to Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), as does his monogram, which imitates the celebrated artist’s distinctive initials. Charmed with the works of his predecessor, Aldegrever visited Nuremberg to study under the master. Returning to Westphalia, Aldegrever first devoted himself to painting but then applied himself entirely to engraving, establishing himself as one of the distinguished little masters, named after the small size of their plates. Aldegrever’s is uncommonly neat, his plates finished with great accuracy and delicacy.
