Nettenboetsters was conceived in the fishing village of Katwijk aan Zee, where Toorop and his family periodically lived during the 1890s. The earliest impressions are light and without too much contrast, whereas the later prints are heavier with the clouds more pronounced, without any differences in state. One of these later impressions is in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art [1934.163].
